Jewel Box Pop-Up Exhibit

I will have 3 of my steel and glass sculptures displayed at a cool little pop-up gallery in Hyattsville, MD this month along with 18 other talented artists of a variety of artistic disciplines. Arts In Embassies Holga

A while back I was contacted by the Arts In Embassies program because they wanted to display one of my Holga images in the US Embassy in Kosovo. I also just found out that I am officially on their web site as an Arts In Embassies artist! The web site is http://art.state.gov/artists.aspx and the direct link to my profile is HERE - if you go to the main site you will have to skip to page 5, where my profile is listed alphabetically. You can see the photo that they are displaying there, which is an image of the Dupont Circle Fountain that I photographed during one of our Sketchcrawls a couple of years ago.

If I get photos of the print hanging on the wall in the Embassy in Kosovo, I will share them here. The image is a scan of the original film, printed 12x12 inches, and framed at 20x20 inches, so a little bigger than my normal display format. 

So now I can officially call myself an internationally exhibited artist. :)

Whodunit?

I wanted to let everyone know about a fun exhibit I will be participating in this coming Saturday where everything is not always as it appears...

Whodunit  -  Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

Artists included in this show will either show an original from their own collection in their own style or imitate each other's artistic style... or maybe both! The viewers exploring the works in the show will embark on a treasure hunt as they try to determine if a piece was done by the original artist or someone else. If the piece is a copy -- then who did the copy?

In less than two weeks I will be exhibiting some brand new steel and glass sculptures in Frederick, MD. If that information alone does not make you want to journey to Frederick, I may be able to entice you with the fact that ultra-talented glass artists Sean Hennessey and Erwin Timmers will also be exhibiting with me! The three of us work primarily out of the Washington Glass School in Mount Rainier, MD (Erwin in Co-Director and Sean is a Resident Artist).

Our exhibit is called "Constructing Content" and will be displayed Dec. 1-30.

Artomatic - Meet the Artists Night

Tomorrow night (Saturday June 2) from 7-9 PM is Meet the Artists Night at Artomatic. I will be present in my space on the 9th floor near the Peeps in case anyone wants to come and talk to me about my latest steel and glass sculptures. Or just come out and harass me.  :)

Artomatic 2012

I'm spreading the word about Artomatic, which returns this year with a bigger space than ever before and opens to the public on Friday evening. My artwork is located on the 9th floor in space #212, near the Peeps!

I am always excited about Artomatic because it's soooo much fun, but also because I'm debuting 3 brand new steel and glass sculptures. This is a relatively new focus for me, and I have spent the past year and a half learning the skills of glass and metal work in order to create these pieces. It's quite a turn from my Holga photography of years' past, and I intend to take this new body of work even further as I continue to learn and hone my skills.

Hi-Fi vs Lo-Fi

i have another exhibit coming up very shortly, this time in the midwest. lala gallery in lafayette, indiana, had approached me about a show theme that involved the contrast of digital cameras vs film cameras, and thought my work would be perfect for the film side of things. the resulting exhibit is HiFi vs LoFi, and should be pretty interesting given all the different applications of both film and digital media. 10 of my holga images will be representing the LoFi side of things!

the places we have known

i have yet another exhibit that is currently running for the next month or so... this one's at the stamp gallery at the university of maryland, college park.  the exhibit, entitled "the places we have known," is a three-person photo exhibit featuring adrienne moumin, lisa mccarty, and myself.  the exhibit examines our unique interpretations of space and how we portray scenes.  8 of my newer holga images are featured here.  check it out - it runs through july 15!

gallery 555 - sculpture exhibit

i just found out that my sculpture entitled "modern plan of survival" will be included in the washington glass school student exhibit at gallery 555 starting in a couple of days, and i'm super excited for my first sculpture on exhibit in over a decade!

i had to weld a base for the piece specifically for this show, so it will be displayed as a free standing artwork even though it was originally designed to be mounted on the wall. the stand is not permanently attached, so it can now be displayed either way. :)

being the diligent photographer that i am, i forgot to bring a camera with me when i finished and dropped off the finished piece with stand, so i will have to take a photo when i visit the gallery to post at a later time.

late last year i was alerted to a very unique and fun artist opportunity by friend and fellow dc metro artist michael auger - the "art in hand" project.  the project features a fully functional deck of cards each designed by a different local artist in their signature style.  other cities have gone before us, but most recently finished is the washington dc deck, which is currently available now for purchase HERE - you can check out the linked page for a preview of all the wonderful cards created by many of my friends and fellow dc artists.  i can't wait to see the deck in person!

and as if that opportunity wasn't enough, i have now found that there will be a brick and mortar exhibit of most of the artworks that are featured in the deck this summer at touchstone gallery in dc.  this is a huge collaboration of sorts, and will be so fun to be a part of. i hope you are able to check it out. details are below:

DCist Exposed Exhibit

i have not participated in the DCist exposed exhibit since the very first one several years ago. however, i was happy to hear that my image taken at the rally to restore sanity / march to keep fear alive last autumn was chosen to be a part of this year's exhibit.  though it was shot with film, it's one of my rare non-holga images that one can actually see displayed in person, so if you can, check it out.

i've been up to some very different (for me) work over the last couple of months, and the culmination of that experiment is just about done - i am delving into sculpture, specifically with steel and glass!  the pic above is my first piece in what i hope will be a series.

Upcoming Exhibits - Fraser Gallery + Laurel Arts Guild

I am happy to announce some exciting exhibit news! I have two opening receptions in March, and both exhibits will feature some of my new gelatin relief prints!

Firstly, I found out I was accepted into the 9th Annual International Photography Competition at the Fraser Gallery in Bethesda. I plan to attend the opening reception where one of my brand new Gelatin Relief images will be displayed. More info about the show:

MARCH 12 - APRIL 3, 2010

A group exhibition of photography by finalists of this annual competition, curated by Catriona Fraser. $950 in cash prizes will be awarded, with a Grand Prize of $500.

The Fraser Gallery received submissions from 151 photographers. Zip Code Show

You wanna know where you can see my work next? tomorrow, the Zip Code Show opens in Arlington, and I have two Holga pieces on display there (pictured here), one of which is making its gallery debut!

The show, an artdc.org and Art Outlet collaborative event, is being held in partnership with Halstead Arlington and the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization. It will take place at the Halstead Arlington, a new luxury apartment building at 1028 South Walter Reed Drive in Arlington, VA.

The ZIP Code Show will open and close with Saturday night receptions that will include art, artists, performers (see below), a cash bar, and hors d' oeuvres courtesy of Rincome Thai Cuisine . The work will be on display during the receptions and Tuesday, September 1 through Friday, September 4.
